Vinton, the county seat of Benton County, has been known by the
various names of Northport, Fremont and Vinton. A portion of the
town site, then known as Northport, was selected in 1846 as the
seat of justice by the Commissioners appointed by the General Assembly
of the State for that purpose
The first store opened in 1848, and in 1849 the construction of
the courthouse was started, although it was not completed for three
years. On the second Sunday in August, 1850, the first religious
service was held in the unfinished courthouse, having neither windows,
doors, nor had the floor been laid. The parishioners sat on the
floor beams and dangled their legs.
The growth of Vinton was slow because of the lack of railroad facilities.
In 1865 an organization was effected at Cedar Rapids, called
the Cedar Rapids & St. Paul Railroad Company, which promised
to build a railroad through Benton County by way of Vinton. The
first train arrived at Vinton December 14, 1869.
Vinton was incorporated as a city of the second class in August,
1869, with James Wood as its first mayor.
